These treatments are aimed at reducing the effects of aging, but the right procedures must be followed. Best photo facial procedures for skin resurfacing will be looked at below:

Identify the skin type

Before getting any deeper in seeking treatment for a skin resurfacing operation, the first thing the dermatologist or the physician involved should do is a skin analysis to ensure that your skin is safe for a photo device treatment. Usually, people with light skin are better suited for photo facial treatments.

However, there are some lasers like the erbium lasers which are effective even on people with dark skin. Once the analysis proves you to be a good candidate for a facial photo treatment, you can go to the next step.

Clean the surface to be treated

The areas to be treated must be cleaned, and an aesthetic cream applied if necessary. However, there is usually little or no discomfort associated with photo facial treatments.

The actual IPL photofacial treatment: Once the skin is correctly cleaned, it’s time to get the treatment. The treatments are spaced two or three weeks apart depending on the severity of the condition. Any touch-up treatments can be done twice a year or four months apart. The main aim of these photo facial treatments is to boost collagen production. In essence, photo facial treatments can help in:

  • Tightening the pores
  • Reducing the severity of acne or completely containing it
  • Treat sunburns and freckles
  • Correct skin discolorations
  • Reduce the overall signs of aging
  • Stretch mark reduction
  • The skin resurfacing treatments can also help to control and prevent the formation of spider veins

Aftercare treatments

After a photo facial treatment, it’s obvious that the skin will be sensitive and thus any practices like tanning, massage, or hot baths should be avoided until the sensitivity subsidizes.  This should take approximately 2 or 3 days.

In case you need to wear makeup, make sure that you put on sunscreens first. Ensure to maintain the skin moisture at optimum levels even if it means applying moisturizing creams on the skin. Use warm water and a soft cloth to clean the surface two times a day.

Risks associated with photo facial treatments:

  • Skin reddening, tenderness, and swelling that can last up to more than 48 hours but definitely should not exceed 7 days. If the swellings or tenderness is still there by the 7th day, return to the doctor for a further check up
  • There might be minor bruising especially if you take ibuprofen after the treatment. Basically, blood thinning agents should be avoided at all cost.
  • Definitely, there are risks of getting skin burns or blister if the right device is not used or the right protective gears are not used
  • There are reported cases of skin discoloration
  • Risk of secondary infections especially if the resulting open wounds are not well treated

Are photo facial treatments worth the course?

Irrespective of the above-mentioned risks, the benefits that can be derived from the treatments cannot be foregone due to those risks. It’s worth mentioning that photo facial treatments are effective in reducing the effects of aging, restoring skin texture and tone, treating acne as well as rosacea conditions. As such, after putting all factors into consideration, we can conclude that photo facial treatments are worth the course and cost.

Wrap up

It might not always be obvious which type of photo facial treatment to use for a given condition. As such, the best bet is to visit a qualified dermatologist or licensed technician for professional advice and guidance. However, for minor skin resurfacing operations, a LED device is mostly recommended and lasers or IPL facial for more serious skin resurfacing treatments.
